What is a domain name?

A domain name (eg. swishconnect.com.au) signifies your own unique address on the Internet. It is how your customers will remember you and find you among the millions of other web sites on the Internet.

How do I register a Domain Name?

All you have to do is go to our Domain Search and conduct a search in the domain search box. You will be then told whether the domain is available or not. If it is available, then you may continue with the order, if not, just search again.

How long does my domain name take to register?

Wherever possible we will perform registrations as soon as your order is submitted online. However, some domain names do require manual processing and these will normally be processed within 1 working day.

Please note that automated registration only applies to the following domain names:
.com | .net | .org | .info | .biz | .co.nz | .net.nz.

What's included with my Domain Name?

With Swish Connect, our prices include all administrative and registry fees for the number of years you have registered your domain name with us.

Furthermore, every domain name registered with us comes with:
Free Domain Parking
Great Customer Support
Easy Management Tools
FREE Renewal Reminders
Fast Domain Approval

Are there any ongoing or hidden Fees?

Apart from paying for the renewal of your domain name when it is due, there are no other ongoing or hidden fees. Once you have registered your domain name with Swish Connect it is yours.

How many domains can I register?

As many as you like, there is no limit.

What if the name I want isn't available?

Don't be put off. There are lots to choose from. Try a different mix of words, or use abbreviations. You can even try different domain types instead of '.com' or '. com.au'.

In Australia there are many alternatives to choose from including '.net.au', '.org.au' and '.id.au'. If you want an international name, try using '.net', '.org', '.biz' or '.info' instead.

If you still can't find the name you want, contact us and we'll be happy help.

Who owns my domain name?

Domain names are provided as a licence by auDA. As you hold the domain name licence you can do what you want with it. For example, you can use it to point to a web site or use it as an email address.

At Swish Connect all domain names we register are registered in the customer's name. This means that for the duration of the registration period YOU are the licence holder of the domain name.

When the licence is due for renewal, you will have to pay a renewal fee. If you do not renew the licence, then it will become available for any other applicant to register on a first come, first served basis.

Can I register a brand name?

If it is your brand-name, then Yes. However, it is your responsibility to make sure that you do not infringe on the rights of any other company or individual. If you register a domain name in the name of a brand which belongs to someone else, then we reserve the right to cancel the registration. Furthermore, you will be liable for any costs incurred as a result.

I don't have a web site, can I still register a domain?

Absolutely. Swish Connect can park your domain name on our servers for FREE, ensuring no one else can register your domain. Once you have registered your domain name, it's yours, and you can build your website at your own pace.

How many characters can my domain name have?

Your domain name can have a minimum of 2 and up to a maximum of 63 characters - not including the extension (eg. '.com.au', '.net.au' and '.com').

What characters can be used in domain names?

The valid characters for use in domain names are:
Letter A to Z. (eg. abcdefg.com.au)
Numbers 0 to 9. (eg. 911.com)
Hyphens (-). (eg what-is-the-matrix.com.au)
Domains can be any combination of numbers, letters and hyphens.
Domains can begin and end in numbers. (eg. 9to5.com.au)
Domains cannot begin or end with a hyphen (-).
Domains must be a minimum of 2 characters long.

My domain name still appears to be available.

Once a domain name has been registered, it can take up to 48 hours for your application to filter through the systems of other registrars'. During that time, your domain name may still appear available on some WhoIs search databases, even though it has been registered.

Who can register the various .au domain names?

For full details on who can register the different versions of .au domain names available, see Rules for Australia Domain Registration.

Who can register .com and .co.nz domain names?

Anyone is eligible to register domain names in the major United States extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info.

Anyone is also eligible to register the major New Zealand extensions such as .co.nz, .org.nz and .net.nz - you DO NOT need to be a New Zealand company or business to do so.

How do I renew my domain name?

If you have received a renewal notice from Swish Connect, or have realised it is time to renew your domain name, you can do this on our website.

If you are not a Swish Connect customer and wish to renew your domain name through us, you will first need to transfer your domain name to Swish Connect. As soon as the transfer of your domain name has taken effect, we can then renew it. To transfer your domain name to us, simply complete the Domain Name Transfer form.

Who is auDA?

The au Domain Administration (auDA) is the Australian Government endorsed regulatory body of the .au domain space. They develop and implement domain name policies and consumer safeguards. To discover more about auDA and their role, please visit their website at www.auda.org.au.

What is WHOIS?
